Construction & Engineering Sustainability Program Manager Business Outreach/Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
Rick Duarte is part of the newly formed Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). He advocates, implements, and manages the Small Business Requirement (SBR) for Southern California's Metropolitan Water Districts (MWD) Business Outreach Program. MWD’s Capital Investment Planning (CIP) budget is $600 Million (bi-annual), and Rick analyzes every CIP Construction and Engineering contract over $100,000 and establishes the Small Business Requirement.
Rick has over 30 years of water engineering, construction, and design experience. He has a Master in Sustainability Leadership (MSL) from Arizona State University (ASU). He earned his B.S. in Business from the University of Redlands (U of R) and while at the U of R, he was inducted into the Whitehead Leadership Society.
While working for MWD’s engineering department, Rick developed an admiration for water, and the valuable resource MWD provides to its 19 Million customers. Sustainable construction business practices are the basis of his business model.
Rick assisted in developing MWD’s first Climate Action Planning (CAP) Program and worked with other interest groups and utility groups, such as Metro-Moving Beyond Sustainability (MBS). He is an active LASER (Los Angeles Sustainability Executive Roundtable) member and the chair DE&I Committee for the US Green Building Council LA Chapter (USGBC-LA). In addition, he is part of MWD’s SRI & DEI council and former president of MWD’s Hispanic Employees Association (HEA), which is an Employee Resource Group (ERG) that is based on providing support, enhancing career development, and contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion awareness in the workplace. Rick enjoys spending time with his wife, 5 boys, and family; during his spare time, you might find him on the links.
