Assistant Professor of Medical Education and the Director of the Medical Spanish program, Vida, at the California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM)
Dr. Alexandra Lopez Vera has dedicated her career to preparing future physicians to provide culturally sensitive, high-quality care to Hispanic patients. Through her leadership, the Medical Spanish program has become a requirement for every MD student at CUSM, ensuring that the Hispanic population in Southern California receives better healthcare.
Dr. Lopez Vera holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master of Public Health from Claremont Graduate University. Her research focuses on enhancing linguistic and racial concordance in healthcare, particularly for underserved populations. She has published several articles aimed at improving health outcomes for Hispanic communities, demonstrating her commitment to advancing healthcare equity.
Beyond her academic roles, Dr. Lopez Vera is an Inland Empire Free Clinic advisory board member. In this capacity, she works tirelessly to provide linguistically and culturally concordant patient care, reflecting her dedication to community service and her role as a mentor and advocate. Dr. Lopez Vera's efforts extend to mentoring other scholars on effective methodologies for teaching medical Spanish, furthering her impact on the medical community. At CUSM, Dr. Lopez Vera is the program director of the Vida program. She ensures its successful implementation along with other MD faculty. Since the academic year of 2024/2025, its focus has been addressing the linguistic barriers between Spanish-speaking patients and non-Spanish healthcare providers. The Vida Medical Spanish Program at CUSM is a pioneering initiative that enhances future physicians' cultural and linguistic competency. Recognizing the importance of effective communication in healthcare, the program has been incorporated into the mandatory curriculum for all MD students at CUSM.
