EARLY YEARS AND EDUCATION

Born and raised in sunny San Diego, CA, Andrea developed an interest in the arts and mathematics at a young age, inspired by the culture and vibrant infrastructure shaping her community. Pursuing her interests, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a focus in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). During her academic journey, she excelled as President and Social Chair of the UCLA Division I Women's Rugby Team served as Ambassador to the UCLA School of Engineering, and actively competed in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter, cementing her commitment to both academics and extracurricular leadership.


Professional Journey and Milestones

Andrea's career at McCarthy Building Companies began in 2016 with an inkling to make an impact in a traditionally heterosexual white male-dominated field. Starting as a Project Engineer on diverse projects, including the Downtown Brea Superblock I Parking Structure, she quickly demonstrated her prowess in project management and technical understanding. Her tenure at McCarthy has been marked by significant achievements, including her role as Senior Project Engineer for the Soka University STEM Building and Residence Halls, where she oversaw critical construction phases with precision and dedication.

Promoted to Assistant Project Manager, Andrea has been instrumental in the success of several high-profile projects. She was pivotal in the Specialized Solutions Group, working on the Google Irvine and Loma Linda University Medical Center projects, showcasing her versatility in managing diverse construction requirements and client expectations. Notably, her current leadership on the structural concrete scope of the Hoag Hospital Irvine Expansion 3.0 project exemplifies her ability to manage complex timelines and deliver exceptional results.


Advocacy for Diversity and Inclusion

Beyond her technical expertise, Andrea passionately advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the construction industry. As a proud member of the AAPI and LGBT communities, she actively supports initiatives that promote workplace diversity and inclusivity. Her involvement in the Orange County LGBT Pride included:

  • Engaging in the pride parade.
  • Hosting an informational booth.
  • Promoting McCarthy as a proud sponsor of DEI.

Her role as a mentor of the McCarthy Partnership for Women (MPFW) Construction 101 Day involved facilitating hands-on career exploration for high school girls through engaging trade rotations, such as patching drywall, scanning utilities, and using power tools. Alongside MPFW, she inspired 40 Girl Scouts at the Orange County Chapter Summer Camp Program with insight into construction careers. She led them in a hands-on birdhouse-building activity with "blueprint" instructions, tools, and PPE. These experiences highlight her commitment to empowering underrepresented groups in construction.


Community Engagement and Environmental Sustainability

Committed to positively impacting beyond construction sites, Andrea actively volunteers with EcoNow CA, organizing sustainable clothing swaps of gently used items benefiting over 200 participants and donating surplus items to The Friendship Shelter in Laguna Beach. She has also contributed to environmental conservation efforts with EcoNow CA and the Newport Bay Conservancy at the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, preserving Southern California's biodiverse wetlands through litter cleanup and environmental advocacy. Additionally, she has worked with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County to install fire-blocking in new housing units for low-income families in Santa Ana. Andrea is also passionate about supporting local small businesses in Costa Mesa and the greater Southern California area, reflecting her commitment to community enrichment and environmental stewardship.
